I want to learn Parkour

June 16, 2008

Here’s an example of parkour. It’s pretty sweet. From what I’ve read so far, it originated as an efficient, defensive way to escape, if necessary. The same way karate is used to fight someone, parkour is used to flee from someone. It looks like a lot of fun to me, but man, I’m really going to have to get a LOT better at pull-ups before doing any of that stuff.

April Gym Update

April 15, 2008

It’s been almost a month since my last gym update. The last month really went fast, and I’ve finally broken the 220 barrier. I weighed in at 219.5 yesterday.

We’ve had a lot of things to do during the weekdays this month, which has gotten in the way of our gym time. We’ve especially had to sacrifice cardio. I love lifting, and I sometimes work up a pretty good sweat doing it, but the last few pounds have shown me how crucial cardio is to reaching that target weight. Hopefully we’ll get some good running in over the next couple weeks.

P.S. My wonderful wife made me my favorite meal again last night. That coupled with the Bullfrog‘s Chocolate Bock and some really quality time with my boys made for a much needed good night. 😀

Gym Update

March 17, 2008

Well, it’s been about 10 Weeks, since Emily and I have really gotten down to business with eating right and getting in shape. We’re also starting week 9 of the workout Brian sent us.

Not a whole lot to update on other than I’m now hovering between 221.5 and 222 lbs. I’ve been at that weight for about a month now, according to our Excel sheet, and I’d like to push and see some progress in the next week or two. Emily’s continuing her steady progress. We haven’t changed our plan in terms of eating right during the week and relaxing over the weekend, and boy, did I take advantage of it these past two weekends. I was pretty happy, though, that I didn’t gain any weight this past weekend, like I normally do (usually a 0.5-1 pounds).

We’re going to keep it up, and hopefully I’ll be down to around 205-210 pretty soon. My original target weight was 200, but I might not go quite that far before I switch gears and look to start bulking up. Anyone know of good plans to add lots of muscle?

Getting in Shape

February 27, 2008

As you’ve probably read or heard, we’ve joined a gym.

We talked about getting in shape long before we were married, and we both knew that once we got settled in, we’d join a gym and start eating right. We’ve kept an Excel sheet of our weekly weights to chart our success, and we’ve been trying to plan healthier meals (usually from somewhere in here).

Well, it’s been almost two months since we seriously started trying to lose weight, and while I won’t disclose my wife’s progress, I can share mine.

I started at 230 lbs, and I’ve been hovering around the 224-226 mark recently. I’ve limited myself to good meals and only water during the day, and like I said, we’ve been trying to eat well at night. I probably eat dessert once, maybe twice, throughout the week, which anyone who knows my college eating habits knows is a HUGE success for me. Over the weekend, we relax our eating habits, because we normally will eat out with people. The biggest victory over the weekends is usually to stop eating when we’re not really hungry anymore (hard to do at somewhere like Jasmine, Friday’s, or ESPECIALLY the Bullfrog :-P). We’ve also been realistic about our fast food eating. If we do eat fast food, we’ll share a drink and fries, which saves a lot of money, too.

It’s been awesome to actually build some discipline in this area. Brian’s been a big encouragement, and Emily’s naturally dedicated to anything she has her mind set on, so that’s been a huge help. It’s also given me an appreciation for how much work it takes to actually lose weight. This has had a compounding effect on my eating habits, because I know if I eat that 3 Musketeers, I’m going to have to spend 30 minutes on the treadmill to burn it off. Yikes.

By the way, besides being huge and having chiseled Greek-god-like features, my goal is to be able to dunk again. Oh yeah.

Follow-up:
I found this exercise calculator. The one on the very bottom left was a little low I think…

Also, check out this daily calorie estimator. Some how “INCOME – OUTGO” came to mind…
