Starting another one…

Welp…sorry, if it messes up everyone’s feeds, but…I’m moving this blog:  Jon Smock .com

Goals for 2009 (part 1 of ?)

January 24, 2009

I really didn’t think I was going to make a list, as I’ve never really done these before.  I don’t normally think about goals as a “must do”, but rather I mentally keep a running list that changes as I re-prioritize and find different things interesting.

But, over the past few months I’ve really been thinking a lot about open source and what it means.  While some probably associate the phrase with the “super geeky”, it’s really more altruistic and selfless, or at least it can be.  If more operating systems or user software (OpenOffice!) or systems (databases, server software, etc) become open source and become competitive with commercial versions, it means greater accessibility and greater productivity for a whole economy.

Alright, enough rhetoric.  Here are two items that I need to put on my list:

1) Make a Wikipedia contribution.  (Anyone can do this)

2) Make an open source contribution to some project or start a new one (I’d like to give back to Rails or some of the open source Javascript WYSIWYG editors I’ve used).

And, since we’re adding things…

3) Read the entire Bible.

We’re doing #3 with my Bible study, but I really need to get my act together to complete this one.  I sat down the one day to “really make some headway” and stopped when I felt like I couldn’t read anymore…I realized I had read a day’s worth.  Doh!  It’ll be a good lesson in discipline as well as just some good, long-overdue reading.

Music Update

October 3, 2008

I’ve really been digging Death Cab for Cutie lately. Wierd, huh? Check out Summer Skin.

Also, check out Yes by Coldplay. I can’t take how good that song is.

Also, does anyone read this blog anymore? (If so, go comment on this post – Thanks! …I guess it’s pretty lame to beg for comments….well, we all already know I’m lame. No loss there.)

For those of you in feedreaders, click through and check out my brand new Welcome Haiku. Expect to be disappointed, so I don’t have to live up to the hype I just created. Enjoy.

My Personality Type

May 16, 2008

While looking for something else, I found my personality score in my archives. Since we were just talking about it, I figured I’d post a link to it. 🙂

March 13, 2008

Curses! I can never seem to get our budget rolling!

I had such good intentions coming into March. I setup the Excel sheets (for like the tenth time), and I just never followed through. It’s hard to start, I guess, because I pay some bills for next month now, etc, and I never know where to put stuff sometimes. I’m hoping to fill in everything for March still to pick up some momentum for April.

How embarrassing!

Icing on the Cake

January 6, 2008

I left my credit card at a restaurant in State College.

I’ve never left my card anywhere. It always goes straight back into my wallet; it’s got its own space.

Lately I’ve been feeling out of sorts, with work, with my health, with purpose. While we were running all over the state to see family, we both got pretty sick, and I’m still recovering. At work I’ve struggling to finish a large project that’s taken the better part of five months to complete, and I made a major mistake with the last reports I sent out. I just can’t seem to get things in order. As for purpose, I can’t seem to just be happy at work, and I can’t decide if I’m being complacent or peaceful with my walk.

I suppose it comes down to focus. I let myself get overwhelmed with stuff happening with the wedding, moving, other projects, etc. get in the way of focusing at work on the projects at hand. I love my job, and it’s something I can be proud of (raising money for non-profits). I feel like I’m waiting for something with my walk, but I haven’t spent enough time in the Word lately to be at peace with it.

There’s no lesson or point with this post, just something I was thinking and wanted to share.

Kings Pray CSS

October 27, 2007

Excuse the weirdness of the site right now. I’m about half way through messing with the layout, but I just need to get some sleep now :-). Hope you like where it’s going, and please comment to my previous entry: Fighting Poverty.

P.S. Brian, are you happy now? The site’s not ugly anymore (hopefully).

October 25, 2007

You might think by the given title that this is going to be a profoundly insightful post having to do with motivation on abstract levels of human emotion. You’d be wrong.

Basically, I just wanted to celebrate how motivated I was last night to work on the apartment. The past couple nights it seems we’ve hit that one week project barrier where the initial excitement has died down a bit. Last night, however, I dominated this apartment. Dominated. I setup the entertainment center with all our gaming goodies (I got the xbox, playstation, AND cable box to work simultaneously on my old, coaxial-cabled TV – boom, baby, boom), built the two Big Lots “wooden” bookshelves, and put together the black wire bookshelf I used last year. We can finally put stuff away!

Now I just need to fix the coffeetable I broke…L-brachets to the rescue!

Quick Update on the Apartment

October 19, 2007

This has got to be quick, because we just landed a HUGE client yesterday, and I’ll be getting their site up today.

We went to Big Lots today and found everything we need. Also they have $29 DVD players…. We got a TV stand and two bookshelves for the apartment and only spent $158! Yay! It’s not a knock-you-on-your-butt good deal, but it’s not $300 either. After the wedding, honeymoon, and other apartment startup costs, I’m just happy to keep our expenses for October down. Once we hit November, and I get another paycheck or two under our belts, we’ll be good again (moving in the positive direction), but for right now we’re fighting off going into more debt as much as we can :-).
